Chapter 20:

For Pete’s Sake

Margo typed away at her desk as she saw Mickey approach from her peripheral. He primarily worked at the morgue, but the CPD coroner often showed up on the second floor of headquarters to pass his findings to the detectives. He always made it a point to stop at Margo’s desk for some small talk. Margo often referred to it as harassment when complaining to Duke but deep down she enjoyed their banter.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Margo. I hope I’m not interrupting anything too pressing?”

“Mickey, you are always interrupting something pressing. If you are looking for the inspector, he is in the field,” Margo said as she slid her spectacles down to the bridge of her nose and finally made eye contact with Mickey.

“Dagnabbit,” Mickey said under his breath. “Excuse my frustration, but I finally got the lab results for the case he is working on. I came down as soon as we got it in.”

“You realize there is this new technology called a telephone. Could have saved you the trip,” Margo rebutted as she slid her glasses back to their proper position and began typing again. “Just leave the results on my desk and I’ll make sure Inspector Dempsey gets it.”

Mickey placed the envelope with the results on her desk and paused for a moment.

Margo noticed his presence hovering over her. She stopped typing and glanced back up at Mickey. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“I was just curious if you weren’t busy this weekend. Maybe you and I could…umm... I was thinking we could…” the old coroner rehearsed this very moment for weeks, and now that he was in the moment, just couldn’t muster the courage.

“Mickey Doyle, if this is your way of asking a lady out on a date, then I can only imagine how the actual date would go.”

Mickey turned three shades of red and began to stutter worse than before. “I. I…”

“Out with it, for Pete’s sake!”

“Would you like to accompany me to the picture show Saturday?” finally spilled out of him as a bead of sweat started to drip down his forehead.

“My calendar happens to be empty Saturday, and I would be delighted to attend a picture show,” Margo said as she began typing again.

“Oh, ok. Great. I will call you later in the week to finalize plans.” Mickey walked out with a little more bounce in his step, and his whistle could be heard as he descended the staircase. Margo smiled to herself as she typed away on the report she was working on. Her desk phone rang, interrupting her again from finishing her paperwork.

“Charleston Police Department, Inspector Dempsey’s office.”

“Hello Margo, it's Cynthia.”

“Hi dear. I see you got my message. Sorry to put your girls to work like that, but Duke needed your help.”

“Not a problem at all. The number 5-9965 was taken out of service recently. From the records, I have here it was 83 Broad St.”

“Hmm, isn’t that the Post Office?”

“It appears to be,” Cynthia responded.

“Well thank you very much, dear.
